Republicanism in the South has come a longway. If you remember in 1860 South Carolina and eleven other Southern states left the Union as a result of the election of Republican canidate Abraham Linclon. In the 1860's the Republican Party was the party of change.
Republicanism in that time had a hard time in the south, were most Southerners voted Democratic. One reason the Republicans had a hard time in the south, because it tried to force it on the people in the south.
As time passes the parties changed. The Republican party had become more conservative and become more in touch with people, while the Democratic party has became more liberal and grew away of the people and now are trying to shove their progressive ideas on people.
their was a group in the south called Southern Democrats who saw this change and did not like it, and switched to the Republican Party. This ended the control the Democrats had in the South.
With more people in the south who has became more conservative, raither it is from the right to life, strong supporter of the second admendment, freedom of religon, and strong national security and military.
In the South today Republicanism is strong and alive, while the Democrats are a trying breed, we have seen this in the 2004 and 2008 presidental election
